OM

OM

The Sanskrit word Om is made up of five sounds and letters; a, a, ä, u, and m. The first letter "a" represents Arihantas (The Souls who have conquered all four Ghätiya Karmas named “1.Darshna varni 2. Gyana Varni 3. Mohiniya 4. Antraya”. It includes Tirthankaras also who have established religious order before they got salvation and became Siddhas) · The second "a" represents Ashareeri (means without physical body, liberated soul or Siddhas. They are perfect Souls who have got rid of all Eight Karmas.) The third letters "ä" represents Ächärya (Ascetic who is the head of Sangha). The fourth letter "u" represents Upädhyäy (Ascetic who teaches Ascetics). The fifth letter "m" represents Muni (Ascetic (Sädhu or monks) who have following five Mahävrat (great vows). Hence Om represents the salutation to the five revered personalities in Jainism and is a short form of the Namokar Mahämantra.
